Summertime is my favourite time of the year. Obviously I let out a little cheer every year when school is over, but also because there is so much to do this season. If you’re not going abroad for the holidays, there are still plenty of things to keep yourself entertained in good ol’ Belgium - or even Germany, France, etc. if you're up for a road trip. I’ve listed the events I’ve been looking most forward to.
1- Festivals
There’s a 100% chance you’ll see me at Ieperfest in August. A lot of people aren’t familiar with this festival as it’s not the mainstream kind like Rock Werchter or Pukkelpop (I have been to both, as well), but it’s so much fun. At Ieperfest you’ll find hardcore bands and other underground music. I’ve never written about it on Modest Mix, but I am pretty passionate about this music genre and when I heard that some of my favourite bands are playing Ieperfest this year, I knew I just have to be there.

2- Gentse Feesten
Gentse Feesten is an annual tradition in my hometown. It’s a 10-day festival with music & theatre performances and other fun activities on several locations in the city of Ghent. Most of the shows have free entrance. It’s one of my favourite events of the year because the city doesn't sleep when it’s Gentse Feesten! The city’s full of people for two weeks straight, just to give you a heads up if you’re not used to large crowds, but it’s definitely worth visiting.

3- Summer job
Next Monday is the first day at my summer job! I’ll be working for our city’s youth department. It’s my second time doing this job and it’s so much fun. I’ve been active as a volunteer in the youth department for almost 7 years now and being able to work there and see what goes on ‘backstage’ (I guess you could call it that, sort of) has been a new challenge for me! And last year I got to drive around to locations all month, can you believe how much that improved my driving skills as a young driver? Not the most essential about a job, but still, win-win situation!

4- Trip to London
As I already told you in this post, I’m planning some time away to London this summer. It’s been 4 years since I’ve been there, and I can’t believe how much I miss it. The plan's changed a few weeks ago. Mum decided to pass after all, so it's one of my best friends and me now! We booked our train tickets and hostel last night and we’re just so stoked! We’re staying near the British Museum, which is awesome. I love the British Museum so definitely planning on visiting. We’re 5 minutes away from Oxford Street as well, so obviously there’s going to be some shopping!

5- Getting ready for Erasmus
In September I’m starting a new adventure in Finland! The first week of September we’ll be introduced to the ways of the university and the Finnish education system, find out who to turn to in case of questions, who to contact in case I need a doctor, etc. All those details you’ll need to know when going to a new country and meeting a new culture. I’m moving by the end of August, depending on the schedule for my retake exams. It is crazy how time flies! In 2 months I’ll be saying bye to my family and friends for 4 months. Adventure is out there! (Yes, that is an UP! reference. High five if you recognized it!)

    1. I never got a real summer job until last year (I am 21 now) so I'm actually very excited to earn money next month! It also helps that this summer job is pretty chill and I have some awesome colleagues ;)
